Criminal Expectancy Questionnaire (CEQ)

Author: David J. Simourd, Ph.D.

Purpose: Assess criminal attitudes, specifically criminal expectations.

Description: The psychological literature indicates that expectations about outcomes can influence behavior; positive expectations increase the likelihood of specific action whereas negative expectations inhibit specific action. The CEQ is a 28 item self-report questionnaire that assesses criminal expectations. The CEQ assesses various personal (e.g., self-confidence, excitement), situational (e.g., gain money, improve life), and social (e.g., status/popularity, social approval) expectations. Questions are answered using a 5-point response format (e.g., strongly agree to strongly disagree) and summed to yield a Total Score. Higher scores on the CEQ indicate more positive expectations about crime.

Psychometric Information: A limited amount of normative data exists on the CEQ among adult inmates. Internal consistency (i.e., Cronbach Alpha) estimates for the Total Score are .72.

Applications: The CEQ can be used either for case classification contexts (e.g., intake, exit, or one-time assessments) and as a measure of treatment performance (e.g., pre-treatment and post-treatment comparisons).
